4) Eye discharge
Facts : Newborn commonly will have infection either the pinkeye (conjunctivitis from virus, bacteria or allergen) or blocked tear duct, may appear after a few days or weeks. Some infants, the discharge will clear without require further thoughts. But, in some cases, if the yellow discharge and eye condition may require further evaluation.
Cause : Its quite difficult to identify the real cause of it due to the eye discharge will be white, yellow or maybe some dried crust that may seal the eyes.
i) Neonatal conjunctivitis - If the newborn is delivered by vaginal birth, there is a posibility he/she being exposure with bacteria and viruses in birth canal.
ii) Blocked tear duct - Some babies may have blocked or poorly formed tear duct.
ii) A massage to around area of tear duct dew times a day to stimulate activity and may prescibe eye drop. If these measure fail, surgical procedure will require either repair or open the duct.
iii) Using breastmilk with warm cloth to crusty eye, eye infection and blocked tear duct. Its believed breastmilk have antibodies properties and white blood corpuscles that able unblock tear ducts and cure the infection.
5) Jaundice
Facts : This is cause by excess bilirubin - a chemical produced during the normal breakdown of old red blood cells. Its commonly condition and nothing to worry about, in newborns with yellow color skin and whites of the eyes; whereby its affects over half of all healthy babies in the 1st few days of life and highly chance in premature babies. But, occasionally it be more serious that require treatment straight away from doctor. There is 5 commonly jaundice as below:-
i) Physiological jaundice
ii) Prematurity jaundice
iii) Breastfeeding jaundice
iv) Breast milk jaundice
v) Blood group incompatibility

Cause : Newborns tend to have higher level bilirubin as their young livers cannot metabolise the excess bilirubin.
a) Mild jaundice treatment
i) A daily sun bath of 10 - 15minutes with rotation front and back; in morning sun before 9am and evening sun after 5pm. Your baby will require to naked with just left diaper covering their private parts and a hanky to cover their eye.
ii) Increase frequency of breastmilk will help clearing the jaundice.
iii) However, if your baby jaundice seem develop from breast milk; a temporary switch to formula feeding may require till the condition had cleared.
b) Serious jaundice
i) Conventional phototherapy - An ultraviolet light over the baby bed. Normaly, this will be done in hospital. Nowadays, alternatively, you can stay at home for the phototherapy treatment by renting a mobile phototheray machine or bassinet from medical equipment company.
ii) Fibre optic therapy - Highly recommend for premature babies whereby mother can still hug and cuddle the baby. Baby will be wrapped in a special blanket containing fibre optics, which shines little lights directly onto their skin.
6) Growth spurts
Facts : For newborns, parents will experience their babies crying loud and unsettled till they being fed and increasing feeding frequency. Research shows, parent can expect growth spurts at around 7-10days from birth, 3-6weeks and again at 3-6months.
Cause : Its a rapid rise in weight and height - most visible in 1st year of life and around puberty. Normally after a few days, babies will return to their normal feeding whereby the mother's breastmillk supply will readjust until baby's next growth spurt.
ii) Feed as often and for as long as she/he wants. **No worry, your breastmilk supply will adjust itself to how often yout baby is feeding.
